The Benefits of Natural and Organic Sunscreen Vs. Conventional Sunscreen

Jun 7, 2016|By Marta Oddone
Now that Memorial Day weekend has passed, summer is officially in full swing! As you begin shopping for your summer essentials, you may want to spend some extra time researching the types of sunscreen you are buying. Conventional sunscreen will work fine for blocking harmful UV rays, however if you take a look at the ingredients list you will find that most types contain potentially toxic chemicals.

4 Things to Look for When Choosing Sunscreen:

1. Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide Conventional sunscreens use oxybenzone as the main ingredient, which is a known endocrine disruptor and can create free radicals when exposed to the sun. Instead, opt for sun protection from mineral sunscreens with zinc dioxide or titanium dioxide.

2. Added Fragrance Skip products simply listing “fragrance” as an ingredient. They may contain harsh chemicals like phthalates that can irritate your skin. Instead, choose naturally scented lines using essential oils and extracts such as coconut oil, lavender, and green tea.

3. Parabens Walk right past the sunscreens that contain any ingredient ending in “paraben” which can mimic estrogen.

4. Reef-Safe, Biodegradable, and Recyclable Packaging In addition to non-toxic ingredients, you should look for eco-friendly recyclable packaging, as well as “reef-safe” written on the bottle.

Natural sunscreens like Goddess Garden Organics are made from minerals which reflect the sun’s rays, rather than absorb them like chemical sunscreens. You can increase the level of sun protection by choosing sunscreen that combines zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Broad-spectrum protection is very important as it ensures you are protecting against both UVA rays, which can cause premature aging and wrinkling, and UVB rays, which burn skin.

If this will be your first time using natural mineral sunscreens, you may find that they are a bit thicker in consistency and whiter than conventional sunscreens. They may take longer to apply and fully rub in, but with new advancements in organic sunscreen products, such as Goddess Garden’s continuous spray, you get the convenience of conventional while feeling good about the products you are using on your body!
