During a trip to China, Caryl Levine and Kenneth Lee tried black rice for the first time. It’s referred to as longevity rice because it was reserved for Chinese emperors only to ensure their good health and long life. From then, they began importing black rice, calling it Forbidden Rice after the Forbidden City.
